After the podcast was published, I got a couple of emails wondering if what I was saying was simply self-serving, given that I work in technology Product Management myself.I didn’t feel there was anything self serving, because I wasn’t telling people they should hire me :-) , but rather they should hire experienced Product Management right from the start.

Yesterday (October 12th) I attended MIT’s Startup Bootcamp. As someone who is seriously thinking about taking some time off from his consulting lifestyle to work on bootstrapping a product, it was definitely a worthwhile event for me, and I’m glad I took good notes. I thought I’d share some of them in case you’re interested and couldn’t attend.

The doctor’s office seems to be one of the last places not yet transformed by Web technology, but a handful of tech start-ups are trying to change that. Most patients still call to make an appointment and wait on hold to speak with a receptionist. When they arrive at the office, they fill out their medical history and contact information on paper that is filed away in a folder.

I enjoy my new job. I thought I wouldn't. The past few years were spent at dot coms, which present themselves as an employee paradise. Casual dress, flexible hours, innovation, a fun atmosphere, perks, and the lure of possible big money cashouts: everyone wants it! The software tools are sexy and easy open source projects. It's all very cool.

Our analytics is just one of those inputs.

Those of us who have had the privilege of working in the premier startup hub in the world often take its advantages for granted. Among those: plentiful financing and nerds, a culture that celebrates both failure and success, and an ethos of openness and sharing. It's useful to look back to understand how we got those advantages.

Last week, I had a unique opportunity to spend some time in Boulder at the behest of TechStars. It was a great experience to see a relatively new startup hub in action - and thriving. It's easy to take Silicon Valley for granted. The startup scene here can be ostentatious and serve as an echo chamber, amplifying the cool trend of the week into a deafening roar.

More and more universities are realizing that the skills needed to launch a company can be useful even to students who aren't business majors. But can you really teach entrepreneurship, something that's often thought of as a gut instinct? Educators say yes. Aspiring business owners can pick up everything from financing to marketing in a classroom...
