Steve Perlman, Silicon Valley’s self-styled Thomas Edison, has found a way to increase wireless capacity by a factor of 1,000. The plot is Ayn Rand. The triumphant ending is pure Steve Perlman. Slowly but surely, the VCs coax her into bad financial deals. Her work grinds to a halt. All seems lost. But then the old crew of misfits comes to the rescue and gets the girl to go back to the garage where they use borrowed parts and scraps to bring the new technology to life. “That’s my kind of company,” Perlman says. “That is what Silicon Valley is like for those of us that work all night long. It’s crappy offices. It’s borrowed spaces. Welcome to my world.”
